What’s Happening

At this years Open weekend we have loads more going on, both in the store and outside. Tamarack Outdoors actively support Bowland Mountain Rescue Team within their Open Weekends.

Garstang Walking Festival

The Tamarack Outdoors May Open Weekend finishes off the popular Garstang Walking Festival. Take a look at the myriad of events going on at www.wyrebc.gov.uk, the festival runs from the 6 to the 15 May 2011.

Tamarack Outdoors

Tamarack Outdoors will be open from 9am to 5pm on both days, with many items in our mid season sale. Come and peruse the myriad of equipment and clothing, along with an outside tent display.

Basket Weaving

Come and have a go at making your own basket with Don Whiting. Don will steer you through the complexities of basket weaving, to create a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, handmade by you basket, along with many fascinating facts about our heritage. The basket weaving will take place outside the store and will run from 10am to 4pm on both days. The cost is £25 per person, per day.

Chainsaw Carving

James Sheliker makes his living from carving wood with a chainsaw. Come and take a look at this difficult skill, and ask as many questions as you like. James will also be offering wood carvings for sale, along with taking orders for bespoke work.

Bowland Mountain Rescue

The Bowland Mountain Rescue Team, along with there search dogs will be based outside the store. The team provide food and hot drinks along with fascinating information on how the team works and is deployed.

Birds of Prey

Falconer Jim Brown will be on hand on the Saturday to show his many interesting birds of prey.

Ferrets

Peter Jackson the Ferret man will be here over the weekend. You can handle and observe these playful creatures, and find out all there is to know about Ferreting.

Scouts

The local Scout group are giving up their weekend to help run the Open Weekend, along with raising money for Bowland Mountain Rescue.

Lectures

Within the Tamarack Open Weekend there will be a series of lectures and demonstrations.

Fire Demonstration

Come and have a go at lighting a fire by spark using manmade and natural tinder’s. Learn about the history of man and fire, how to create fire from initial ignition to differing types of fire lays.

The fire demonstration will be from 10-11 am on both days.

GPS Training

Tom Grindey from the popular GPS manufacturer Garmin will be giving a lecture and tutorial as well as geocaching using the most up to date Garmin GPS systems.

GPS training will be from 11-12 am on the Saturday only.

Maintenance of Cutting tools

Mike Rushton from Tamarack Outdoors will be discussing the choice and maintenance of cutting tools. He will be demonstrating cleaning, regular and long term maintenance and sharpening of the Axe,Knife,Crook knife, folding saws and multi-tools.

Maintenance of cutting tools workshop will be from 12 am- 1 pm on both days.

Deer Lecture

Come and join Professional Deer Stalker Russell Fralick on this fascinating look at the 6 species of Deer found in the UK. Russell delves into this subject with some unbelievable facts about these animals, ranging from different types of calls, tracking, observation and how Deer live in the wild. He will also be on hand with his rifles and other stalking equipment.

The Deer lecture will be from 1-2 pm on both days.

Outdoor Equipment & Clothing

Mike Rushton from Tamarack Outdoors will be discussing the ins and outs of equipment and clothing for the outdoors. Mike explains the contents of his rucksack while out trekking and for long term camp living. Within the lecture Mike will concentrate on tents and tarps, sleeping arrangements, clothing systems and boots, water filtration and purification, cutting tools, navigation equipment and preserving food stuffs and attaining wild food.

Outdoor clothing & equipment lecture will be from 2-3 pm on both days.

The Bushcraft Show 2011

We will have a stand displaying the Helsport Tipi range at this show from 3rd to 5th June. To be held at the YMCA National Centre Lakeside, which is the largest outdoor centre in Europe, set in an area of outstanding beauty in the heart of the English Lake District. With over 450 acres of private woodland estate bordered by a mile and a half of shoreline onto Lake Windermere, it is considered one of the finest located outdoor centres in the world.
